Digital Citizenship
In session 7, we have learned about digital citizenship which refers to supporting children and young people to participate safely, effectively, critically, and responsibly in a world filled with social media and digital technologies where it became a priority for educators around the world. It can be also defined as the norms of appropriate, responsible behavior concerning technology use. Moreover, it is how we should act while using digital tools and interacting with others online to use technology in an appropriate, responsible, and empowered way.
All students need digital citizenship skills to participate fully in their communities and make smart choices online and in life. It’s a role of a teacher to give the right information to the learners or the right users. Furthermore, creating awareness and advocating the digital norms or the netiquettes to the students is the responsibility of a tutor. In this way, we can create a constructive contributive citizen in society.
Teachers can teach and guide students about those nine elements of digital citizenship such as the resources that are authentic and remind students not to forget to cite the source. As most of the students are engaged in online chats, in the worst cases, this kind of behavior can devolve into cyberbullying which has been trendy nowadays. This is why teaching empathy and using correct text for the chats have the potential to make an enormous difference in your students’ lives. Another is, as a teacher we should use the technology timely, wisely, in the right way by trying to access every possible knowledge we can from the digital community and then also provide to the society through their dedication and creativity. More importantly, teachers must teach the skills and guide students to be aware of the ethics and the correct use of information.
